The Chrysler Legacy

 

For more than a century, the Chrysler name has been a part of the auto industry, starting with Walter Chrysler, who began his career working in railroad shops but ended up as a manager at Buick. After nearly a decade at Buick, Chrysler acquired a controlling interest in Maxwell Motor Company, which was a struggling car company on the verge of disappearing. After acquiring it, he reorganized it into the Chrysler Corporation in 1925, utilizing its assets and some automotive designs for early Chrysler models. This was the start of the Chrysler brand that continues to this day, but Walter Chrysler was not done.

 

Having learned from William Durant's creation of the GM family of brands during his time at Buick, Walter Chrysler acquired more companies, including Fargo Trucks and the Dodge Brothers Company. He also created more brands, such as Plymouth and DeSoto, offering numerous models across these divisions to meet a wide range of needs. This led to Chrysler becoming a major player in the auto industry. Though there have been ups and downs for this legendary brand, it still ranks among the Big Three US auto manufacturers alongside Ford and GM.

Following struggles in the 1970s, CEO Lee Iacocca famously turned Chrysler around in the 1980s and made it profitable again, reminding drivers of the prestige this brand has long been known for. In 1998, Chrysler merged with German car company Daimler-Benz to become DaimlerChrysler, but the merger was short-lived, and the two brands went their separate ways in 2007. In the fallout of the financial crisis at the end of the 2000s, the company was acquired by Fiat, becoming Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in 2014. In 2021, Fiat Chrysler merged with the French Peugeot Group to create the multinational Stellantis Group. Today, Chrysler remains an integral part of Stellantis and a reminder of how impressive American manufacturing can be.
