ASE certification is an industry-recognized standard of excellence from the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence. Here at Bedard Bros. Chrysler Jeep Dodge, we're proud to have ASE-certified auto mechanics on our service team. Here's their quick take on ASE certification.

The Basics of ASE Certification

ASE certification happens twice annually after prospective auto mechanics sit for a series of rigorous certification tests. To sit for tests, an auto mechanic must also complete one of several corresponding education or vocational requirements:

  • An apprenticeship in an auto repair shop
  • Two years experience working as an auto mechanic
  • One year of auto mechanic experience and a two-year auto tech degree from an accredited trade school

Types of Certification Tests

The NIASE offers more than 50 different types of certification tests, including those for entry level mechanics. The tests are multiple choice and last about an hour. They assess the auto mechanic's expertise in the areas of:

  • Heating
  • Air conditioning
  • Electrical systems
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Brakes
  • Axles
  • Transmission
  • Engine performance
  • Engine repair

The NIASE also offers specialty certifications leading up to Master Technician. Each certification corresponds to years of training, experience and knowledge in areas like collision estimation, parts, diesel engines and painting/refinishing.
